What are tags?

Tags allow you to make properties visible on the Map. By default, only objects are shown on the map, object properties aren't. With tags, you can turn an object property into a fake object of type tag. This newly promoted property will be shown on the map, automatically connected to the object it belongs to with a link labelled tags.

Example

When using the Jira data source you can view the object Bug and then the map to see which projects the object called Bug is part of, but you can't see the Hierarchy Level, because it is a property not an object. You can add Hierarchy Level as a tag, and it will be shown on the map, connected to the object Bug.

How to add a tag property

  1. On the left hand nav bar in SquaredUp click on your data source, to open the data source overview page. In this example we're going to use the Jira data source.
  2. In the Objects pane click on the object you're interested in, then, if necessary, click on the Object Details tab. The Properties pane shows all the object properties, and you can hover over the name of the property that you want to make a tag, and click on Copy internal property name. In this example we're looking at the object Bug and its property Hierarchy Level.
  3. Browse to Settings > Advanced > Tags
  4. Click on the button Add tag property.
  5. Add a tag property by entering the following:
    1. Name:
Enter the name of a property to tag. If you copied the internal property name earlier you can just paste it here. For the Jira example it will paste hierarchyLevel, but for other data sources it could be owner, emailAddress, author, etc. This is the object property that you wish to promote to a tag object.
    2. Type:
Optionally, enter a Type with which to restrict tag promotion. Property promotion to tag objects will only occur for objects of this type. If you don't specify anything here, tag objects will be created for matching properties of all object types. You can find the Type property back on the list of object properties where you copied the name property. Toggle Show internal properties to ON, hover over the value next to Type, for the Jira example this is issue type, and click on Copy property value. Paste this into the Type box on the Add tag property window.
  6. Click Save.
  7. On the left hand nav bar click on your data source again, to open the data source overview page. Click the Refresh index button at the top to reindex.
  8. To check that adding the tag has worked, browse to your object again by clicking on your data source, finding the object in the Objects pane, then clicking on it.
  9. Open the map to check that your object's property is now shown at the top of the page and on the map.
